PHOTOGRAPHY

As the backbone to his skills as a filmmaker, Ryan has been a professional photographer since he was about 20 years old.

Starting his career shooting entirely on film, his first paid job was a commission to photograph studio shots of dancers for a popular dance book being published internationally by A&C Black (now owned by Bloomsbury Publishing) – one of the biggest publishing houses in the UK.

Since then he has developed his photography skills in many areas – including headshot, portrait, fashion and landscape photography. His works have been curated for galleries, such as Whitewall Galleries in Leeds. And he was head-hunted and trained to be a paparazzo by an agency whist he was living in L.A. However, after just one bizarre day on the job trying to tail a very kind Christina Ricci (who actually waited for him to catch up to her), he realised that being a member of the paparazzi was 100% not for him!

Nowadays Smith typically just uses his photographic eye when directing his films and music videos, and for his private collection of photos. However, he does occasionally do headshot photography and fashion shoots for actors and models, usually in London (examples below).
